The Betrothed by Kiera Cass—Read with Me

I read The Selection series about three years ago, and I absolutely loved everything about it! The characters were wonderful, the plot was so intriguing, and the romance was to-die-for! So when Kiera Cass came out with The Betrothed, I was so excited to read it, just like many other Selection-fans! And because it has been such a highly-anticipated release of this year, I thought that it would be a fun idea to write a ‘Read with Me’ blog post, where you can read my thoughts while I flipped through the pages of this book. I originally saw this idea here, and though I’m not sure if I did it right, I really enjoyed this experience!! 😊

Spoiler alert! This post will contain A LOT of spoilers, so if you haven’t read The Betrothed and you would like to, then please don’t read this post!

Goodreads synopsis: When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled. After all, she’s grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true. But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.

Also, all of the page numbers that I use in this post are from Libby. I don’t think that they will be the same as the paper-copy of this book, which I am so sorry about, but hopefully they will be close! 🤞

Chapters 1–10

  • Before I started—I really hope that this book will be good! Also, the cover is absolutely gorgeous!! 😍
  • “What is a friend but someone who thinks you’re capable of more than you do?” (Cass 15).—Yes, so true!
  • “‘Besides,’ she added, ‘are you really in a a position to talk about anyone’s potential?’” (Cass 16).—That was so mean! Also, I feel like Hollis should have stood up for Delia Grace.
  • I took it and rose, looking into a beautiful set of honey-brown eyes” (Cass 18).—Ooo la la! Just like Maxon I see…
  • “‘And yet they made the most charming girl in the world,’ he said, kissing my hand.” (Cass 19).—I don’t think that I like him very much.
  • “Was he trying to say he thought I should marry? Or was he hinting that I should marry… him?” (Cass 22).—Is it just me or does Jameson seem a bit fishy? I don’t like the words he chooses to say! They all sound so flippant and superficial.
  • I knew he’d kissed Hannah and Myra, but if he’d kissed any of the others, they weren’t telling” (Cass 23).—Selection vibes!!
  • “The windows depicted scenes from Corona history in glorious illustration, cascading color and light throughout the room” (Cass 28).—That’s such a beautiful sentence!
  • “‘My lady Hollis.’ He shook his head. ‘You are the rising sun. Gorgeous’” (Cass 28).—Firstly, she is not yours! See? He’s very fishy. Also, who talks like that? “You are the rising sun.” Bleh. ☹️
  • “Jameson’s lips lifted into a devilish smirk. ‘Don’t worry Hollis. You will learn everything soon enough’” (Cass 35).—*Gulp.* That sounded really evil.
  • “The boy nodded, his eyes downcast” (Cass 48).—I think that he’s the mysterious stranger Hollis starts to have feelings for!!!
  • “And the blue pulled me in, refusing to let me go” (Cass 48).—I was right! This book just got a whole lot more interesting! Yay! 😊
  • “Your time and affection, you laughter and care” (Cass 52).—Aren’t you the king?! Of course people will give you their time and affection!! Especially if by doing so, they have the opportunity to become the queen!
  • “‘That, my sweet Hollis, is what I love you for’” (Cass 54).—Whoa, what?! Love her for?? You barely even know her!! That’s not love.
  • “‘Yes, but not for long. This is no game, Hollis’” (Cass 58).—That was really serious!
  • “There hair alone made them unmistakeable; these were the boys from Isolte” (Cass 59).—Yes!! Hopefully something exciting is going to happen next!
  • “‘Probably for the best. The river claimed a very dear pair of shoes.’ He laughed, kicking at the stone floor idly” (Cass 62).—Team Silas all the way! He seems so kind and genuine.
  • “I swallowed, knowing the following statement would shock Delia Grace. ‘I’ve asked you here to offer you a position in my household’” (Cass 63).— First off, did Nora ever apologize to Delia Grace?! Secondly, why didn’t Hollis tell her best friend this? That’s not very kind of her.
  • “‘Delia Grace fell into the arms of some other ladies, and I fell into Jameson’s’” (Cass 76).—*Sigh.* That’s really romantic.

Chapters 11–20

  • “For every answer I got right, I got to take a bit of pie, so, naturally, I was starving by dinnertime” (Cass 79).—I would be starving too. 😂
  • “His smile didn’t seem as genuine as it had before” (Cass 89).—I feel like Silas will be really good for Hollis. I just realized that their names sound similar! Interesting!!
  • “I giggled. Without thinking, I reached down to reassure him, taking his hand. ‘I promise.’ Caught off guard, he looked down, staring at our hands. But he didn’t rush to pull his away. And neither did I” (Cass 90).—Yes!! The pot has been stirred!
  • “Her returning look was smug. ‘You don’t speak first. I speak first’” (Cass 95).—That wasn’t very nice. ☹️
  • “And there went my heart, skipping as if being trapped in my chest was just too far away for comfort” (Cass 102).—Skip away Hollis’ heart! Skip all the way to Silas and the kiss him and then marry him!
  • “He smiled with a shrug. ‘I know. I like that about you. You’re always trying’” (Cass 111).—He’s so kind! I really like him!
  • “But I found my hope restored that Silas would at least be safe when I saw a hint of golden fabric peeking out from his sleeve” (Cass 112).—Ooo!
  • “‘You don’t have to worry about this. You don’t have to think so hard. All you need to do is show Coroa how good a Queen you can be. And upstage that girl of Quinten’s’” (Cass 114).–I officially hate him! Hollis is not just a pretty face!! She’s talented and she can help change Coroa for the better. ☹️
  • “The look in his eyes was more of a warning than his words. ‘If you wish to stand next to the fire, by all means. You’re the one who’ll be burned’” (Cass 121).—I wonder what he means.
  • “But neither of us moved. Until we both did, meeting in the hallway for a stolen kiss” (Cass 124).—YAYAYAYAY!!! What should their ship-name be? Sollis? Hilas? Yay!!! 😋
  • “I’d said he couldn’t burn me. I still believe that. If I was going to go up in flames, it would be my own doing” (Cass 125).—I loved those last sentences! What a great way to end this chapter!
  • “‘It hit very close to its mark. And he turned back to me, raising his eyebrows and clearly waiting for praise. ‘Bravo, my lord!’” (Cass 126).—I guess he isn’t very humble.
  • “She shook her head. ‘No, I’d just like to be with you’” (Cass 130).—They are friends now! Way to go Hollis!
  • “‘Besides, I’d have to turn you down anyway,’ she went on. ‘We’re hoping to settle out in the country soon, somewhere with a lot of land and quiet’” (Cass 134).—What? No!! What about Silas and Hollis’ relationship? Their future together? 😭
  • “In the end, we made enemies with our heads, but we unmade made them with our hearts” (Cass 135).—Wow, that’s a wonderful quote!
  • “I was left sitting in my hard chair, stunned. What in the world had just happened?” (Cass 141).—I have no idea but I’m really worried!
  • “‘But you are my sun, Hollis’” (Cass 145).—Omg! Ahhh!
  • “He stepped back, falling into a deep bow, and using every last bit of willpower I had in my body, I turned and walked away” (Cass 146).—Nooo!! Come back!

Chapters 21–36

  • “I shook my head. ‘What would I do without you?’ ‘We’ve already been over this, Hollis. You‘d drown’” (Cass 148). —Haha! 😂
  • “He scoffed. ‘Oh, Hollis, they aren’t our children. They’re mine’” (Cass 153).—Omg! That jerk!!! ☹️
  • “I hurried from the room before anyone could see how violently I was crying” (Cass 154).—Poor Hollis!! 😭
  • “She shook her head and started muttering. ‘It should have been me’” (Cass 158).—That was not what I was expecting her to say.
  • “‘Please believe me when I say, I would never intentionally hurt your family.’ ‘Intent doesn’t matter if it happens anyway’” (Cass 164).—That’s very true.
  • “Silas had once made a joke about me belonging in a crown of flowers, and now I was wearing the biggest and most fragrant blooms I could find atop my head” (Cass 167).—Omg! That’s absolutely perfect! 😍
  • “‘I know exactly who I am. And I’m content with it.’ I touched her cheek. ‘You’re my mother. I wish you could be content with me too’” (Cass 169).—Yay! Hollis stood up to her mother! Yes!!! You go girl!
  • “I turned and saw, under the light of all the torches, that Silas was hiding out here, too, and that he had been crying as well. We looked at each other for a moment, both shocked and amused, and then laughed to find one another out here” (Cass 174).—Omg! They are so cute!!
  • “‘Don’t be silly,’ he breathed with an easy smile. ‘You’re Hollis Brite. You dance and sing, but you ask questions, too. You battle with ladies on boats, but you provide for those around you. You love to laugh, but you’re learning about sorrow. You are loved by a king but you can see him as a mortal. You met a foreigner and treated him like a friend. In a short time, that’s what I’ve seen. To know everything you are would take years to study, but you are the only person in the world I truly want to know’” (Cass 175).—That was the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard. 😭 Follow your heart Hollis!!!
  • “‘Ready the horses,’ I said” (Cass 176).—YES!! YAYAYAYAY! Omg! I really didn’t think that she was going to go!
  • “If you just take your leave of the castle, then do so, I have no fear. You will come back to me, Hollis. I know, without a single doubt, that you will be mine. In the end” (Cass 179).—That sounded like a threat. ☹️
  • “In an effort to make sure Silas and I could I get married within two short weeks, all repairs to Abicrest Manor were focused on the main floor” (Cass 189).—I feel like something is going to go wrong soon! I don’t think that they are going to get married in this book.
  • “My mother was here, I just knew it” (Cass 191).—I don’t think that it’s Hollis’ mother. 😭
  • “She’s lost the baby” (Cass 194).—Nooo! 😭
  • “‘Your dear friend, Valentina’” (Cass 195).—I love their friendship!
  • “Quietly, Sullivan crept out the door” (Cass 196).—I love him! ❤️
  • “‘With all my love, Your Daughter Hollis’” (Cass 200).—I really hope that they come!
  • “‘With this ring, I take thee, Hollis Brite, as my wife’” (Cass 201).—Omg! It’s happening!
  • “‘You may kiss your bride,’ the holy man said” (Cass 201).—YAYAYAY! They are married!
  • “And there, in the middle of my guests, were my parents” (Cass 202).—Yes! They came!
  • “‘I have a sister, I have a sister!’” (Cass 202).—Haha yes!
  • “‘There’s still time,’ I whispered” (Cass 203).—Yes there is. ❤️
  • “‘I’m sorry I can’t take you to Isolte. But… I can take you to Eradore’” (Cass 204).—Yay!!
  • “We were pulled away from our moment by a high-pitched wave of screams” (Cass 206).—No!!
  • “‘The finally came’” (Cass 206).—It’s the Darkest Knights!!!
  • “‘I have to…’” (Cass 210).—Silas can’t be dead! Omg! Nonono! 😭
  • “It hit me then, though I’d been aware of it for hours. My parents were dead. My husband was dead. I was alone” (Cass 213).—Nonono! This is not what was supposed to happen!! But how did Darkest Knights know where to find them? And that their wedding was today? Could it have been Valentina? I hope that she didn’t betray Hollis! I really liked her!
  • “‘Certainly not your king’” (Cass 216).—He’s a heartless monster!!
  • “And Silas” (Cass 218).—😭😭
  • “‘And I think you need to stay here and start your life’” (Cass 219).—Omg! I just realized something! Jameson said that he knew Hollis would come back to him no matter what, which means that maybe he had something to with the Darkest Knights. So it wasn’t Valentina or King Quinten??
  • “‘Though you may think it unlikely after all that has passed between us, I was most heartbroken when to hear about the recent death of your fiancé and parents’” (Cass 224).—No you weren’t!! You were ecstatic because it was probably your doing you jerk! ☹️
  • “I started crying, wiping the tears with the sleeve of my gown. ‘I used to feel like there was something pulling me to you. I didn’t know what it was, but ever since I first saw you, it felt like there was a string around my heart, tugging me to wherever you were.’ I shook my head. ‘I don’t feel it anymore. But I long to’” (Cass 228).—This is so sad. 😭😭😭
  • “‘I appreciate the thought, but I’ve known for a long time that I don’t want to be near a crown ever again. And… Jameson… I don’t know if he ever really loved me. Or if I ever really loved him’” (Cass 232-233).—Okay that’s good. Hopefully they won’t get back together!
  • “My breath sped up as I focused on the sensation, wanting to make absolutely sure” (Cass 234). —Please tell me that the string isn’t tugging Hollis towards Jameson! He’s terrible!
  • “‘Well, maybe you,’” I offered to Etan”(Cass 237). —Haha yes Hollis! Whoop whoop!
  • “‘I’m not afraid’” (Cass 238). —Yes!!! Yes yes yes!

Thank you so much for reading and I hope that you have a wonderful day! ❤️—Rishika
